Coding the News
Learn how America's top news organizations escape rigid publishing systems to design beautiful data-driven stories on deadline.
Simple Applications
Demonstrate professional effort and experimentation
Each week in Module 2, we will build a project together in class. For homework, you will build a second version of the same type of project. You'll be graded based on the effort you put into your homework, how much you experiment beyond the in-class version, and how well you present your work.
Effort
You are expected to develop a working project that is deployed to a live URL and functions correctly.
| Points | Criteria |
|---|---|
| 7 | The site loads without errors, all features work as expected, and the project is built with a different topic/dataset than the one we used in class |
| 5–6 | The site loads but has minor issues — a broken layout at certain screen sizes, a feature that doesn't quite work, or incomplete data |
| 3–4 | The site is deployed but has significant problems — key features are broken, the data doesn't load, or large sections are incomplete |
| 1–2 | An attempt was made but the site does not load or is not deployed |
| 0 | No submission |
Experimentation
You are expected to include something the in-class version did not have.
| Points | Criteria |
|---|---|
| 1 | You added a feature, design element, or interactive component that goes beyond what we built together. This could be an extra filter, a different chart type, a custom design treatment, a new section, an animation — anything that shows initiative |
| 0 | The project closely follows the in-class version with only the topic/dataset changed |
Presentation
You are expected to present your work in class, sharing what you built and demonstrating how you made it work.
| Points | Criteria |
|---|---|
| 2 | Presented your project when asked, clearly explaining what you built and how it works |
| 1 | Presented your project but with limited explanation or clarity |
| 0 | Did not present when asked |
Grading Scale
Each of your four projects is graded on the three components above. Your Module 2 grade is the average of those scores.
| Points | Grade |
|---|---|
| 10 | A |
| 9 | A- |
| 8 | B+ |
| 7 | B |
| 5–6 | B-/C+ |
| 3–4 | C/C- |
| 1–2 | D |
| 0 | F |
