CUNY students, we want you

By

Applications are now being accepted for the CUNY News Applications Internship, which will welcome a student journalist to the Reuters newsroom at 3 Times Square in the summer of 2025.

The 12-week paid position is open to any current student at the City University of New York’s Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism.

The apprentice reporter will join the News Applications Desk, an editorial team focused on creating dashboards, databases and automated systems that benefit clients, inform readers, empower reporters and serve the public interest. The initiative aims to publish timely, trustworthy resources that lead to a greater understanding of the world’s most pressing issues.

The intern will develop software that gathers, refines, enriches and publishes data for a professional audience. That could include the creation of:

  • A collection of charts, maps and tables that presents a comprehensive, high-level, real-time view of a single topic.
  • A tailored website that allows readers to explore a newsworthy database.
  • A data pipeline that monitors data feeds, discovers tips and drafts templated content.

They will find opportunities to partner with Reuters editors and reporters worldwide. That will include working with members of the newsroom’s other data journalism groups, such as its award-winning analysis team and its globe-spanning graphics desk.

This work requires blending skills from journalism, computer programming and product design. Ideal participants bring interest in more than one of those areas. The strongest applicants will be able to demonstrate experience creating data-driven applications for the general public.

The partnership between Reuters and CUNY, America’s largest urban public university, began in the summer of 2024. The first student to fill the position developed a templated chart that hits the wire seconds after each month’s US jobs report, wrote a web scraper to fuel a plot of the partisan split in consumer sentiment surveys and drafted the design for our automated hurricane maps.

Next year’s intern will start work on June 16 and report to me. Applications, which can be submitted via this form, are due by December 15.
